Today Peyton Manning and Jim Irsay had a press conference announcing the departure of Manning from the Colts.
It’s been a sad day.
I actually found out the night before the press conference. A few friends gave me a heads up that it was coming. Some were very graceful about it, while others were jerks. Still, I hung on to hope that the press conference would end with Peyton staying on for another year and Luck sitting on the bench while being mentored by Peyton.
Unfortunately it was all wishful thinking…and he was let go today.
I’ve been a fan of Peyton and the Colts since I was 14. He had finess and class unlike any QB I’d ever seen. I looked forward to watching him on the field every Sunday. I loved watching his many commercials and seeing him on SNL. I remember practically going insane with joy when the Colts won the superbowl. He’s a big reason I stomped the crap out of my Fantasy Football league members two years in a row. He’s one of the main reasons I love football.
I’m a Colts fan, but Peyton was such a huge part of that. The man is a legend; and irreplaceable. It hurts to see him go. It’s going to be hard watching them and not see #18 on the field. I know it’s silly, but it’s going to take a while to get over this.
Thank you Peyton for 14 awesome years. Thank you for resurrecting the Colts and bringing them to greatness. Thank you for inspiring me to go rogue and choose a football team to follow instead of rooting for whoever my uncle coached for. I’ll support you wherever you decide to go.
